When I’m in the mood for a fresh and ultra-filling salad, I

head straight to Salad Stop, a build-your-own-salad haven

with loads of ingredients to suit any taste. Start with a salad

base for $9.90 (greens include romaine, cabbage, rocket

and baby spinach), before piling on all kinds of free toppings,

from beetroot, chickpeas, edamame, sweet corn and cherry

tomatoes to roasted pumpkin, green apples, lentils and soba

noodles. Then, move onto premium toppings (50 cents to $3)

like

feta, Parmesan, avocado, seared tuna, roast chicken,

Cajun shrimp, quinoa

and

falafel

. Lastly, choose from 18

different dressings; I love the

Arabian spiced vinaigrette

.

You’ll end up with a hearty salad costing anywhere from $10

to $18, depending on what you add; I always wind up super-

full for about $11. You can also create your own wrap ($9.50

to $12.50) with the same selection of ingredients.

With 12 outlets located across Singapore, it’s really

convenient and saves me the hassle of buying and chopping.

Even more convenient is the option of ordering online in

advance, and picking up in-store – no queueing necessary.

I love Bar Bar not just because it’s affordable, but because

it’s got three separate kitchens cooking up three different

types of cuisine – which means if my husband’s in the

mood for Thai and I’m fancying Indian, we can both come

away happy. I love the spicy and filling

chicken tikka

masala

($13) paired with a plain or

cheese naan

($2

to $3) from the Robertson Quay outlet’s Sher Northern

Indian menu; their

moong dahl curry

($6) – lentils

cooked with onions, garlic, ginger and other spices –

is also delicious. If you’re in the mood for Thai, try the

green curry chicken

($9.50) and the

mango Salad

($9.50) off the Thai menu. Or, if you’re simply craving

Western food, you’ve got a choice of burgers from $12.90,

pastas from $9.90, and sandwiches and salads from $11.

The recently opened Bar Bar location in Holland Village,

however, swaps Thai for Japanese izakaya options –

including

soba noodles

($5.90 to $13.90),

yakitori

($3.90

to $11.90),

tempura

($7.90 to $11.90),

teriyaki dishes

($6.90 to $13.90) and

donburi

sets ($9.90 to $13.90) –

alongside Northern Indian and Western offerings.

This small, quirky halal cafe in heartland Bukit Merah serves amazing desserts,

ice cream floats and coffee, along with some tummy-fillers that won’t break the

bank. The

churros

($11) – dipped in sugar and served with chocolate sauce –

and the fluffy, sweet

butterscotch soufflé

($14) served with ice cream definitely

don’t disappoint; if you crave savoury, there’s a small selection including the

chilli

crab-cake burger

($14) with potato wedges, salad and yummy chilli sauce, and

the

“Ramly meets Wendy” burger

($14; ask the waiter to explain the name!),

consisting of a beef patty wrapped in omelette and served with shitake mushrooms.
