WINE&DINE

234

May15

By Anthia Chng

Looking to relieve the heat? The

EL

team hunted down the newest and hottest frozen

desserts to cool you down in a jiffy. Here are six recently opened dessert spots to try now.

Beat the Heat with

Crave Ice Cream

#01-203 Block 248, Bishan Street 22

facebook.com/crave.icecream

We were especially thrilled to discover

this gem in the Bishan neighbourhood,

because it’s right near the

EL

office! This cosy ice cream

parlour specialises in the classic ice-cream-and-waffles

combination, with locally made ice cream in 12 flavours,

including yam, coconut andmocha. Instead of the standard

fluffy waffles, here they serve chewy, Liège-style squares that

perfectly complement the ultra-creamy ice cream.

MUST-TRY:

Crave On the Go ($4.80), a scoop of ice cream

served with bite-sized waffle chunks.

Milkcow

2Handy Road, #01-03 The Cathay

facebook.com/milkcow.sg

Getting in on the recent soft-serve craze

in Singapore is Korean ice-creamery

Milkcow, selling smooth, organic soft

serve with unusual toppings like natural

honeycomb and cotton candy. Though facing some strong

competition, this popular chain’s ice cream stands out for

its distinctly milky flavour.

MUST-TRY:

The Black Pearl ($5.90), an addictive combination

of gianduja chocolate syrup and organic salt.

YiLi Pao Pao Ice

181 Orchard Road, #B2-05

Orchard Central

facebook.com/paopaoice

A great alternative to ice cream

and gelato, YiLi Paopao – a dessert concept direct

from Taipei’s Shilin Market – is known for distinctive, icy,

smoothie-textured treats in a range of flavours with a variety

of toppings. Choose from the list of specials, or create your

own combination of any two flavours ($5.60) – strawberry

with pineapple is a refreshing option.

MUST-TRY:

Boba Milk and Egg ($5.60), a milky shaved ice

with Taiwanese tapioca pearl balls.

Insadong Korea Town

26 Sentosa Gateway, #01-33 Resorts World Sentosa

facebook.com/insadongkoreatownsg

For an unusual treat, try the J-cone ($6) from this Korean-style

food village on Sentosa. Popular in Seoul’s trendy Insadong

area, it features a corn cone shaped in the letter “J”, filled with

vanilla soft serve – a fun concept that requires no utensils to

enjoy. Aword of warning, though – be prepared for funny stares

while you eat this awkwardly shaped confection. Other sweets

include churros with soft serve ($7) and red bean shaved ice

($10), and a wide array of savoury Korean dishes.

MUST-TRY:

J-cone ($6)

Nookie Yogurt

1 Selegie Road, #01-04 PoMo

9833 1790

Popular for its frozen yogurt parfaits topped

with fruit and all sorts of other ingredients,

Nookie Yogurt offers a mix of fun flavour combinations like

Mango Sticky Rice, Matcha Black Sesame Crumble and

Strawberry Watermelon Rose ($6.90 each), or you can

customise your own creation ($3.50 to $6.30).

MUST-TRY:

Red Velvet Parfait ($6.90), a signature confection that

includes red velvet cake crumbs, strawberry, banana and

double-chocolate fudge sauce.

+39 Gelato Bar

29 Circular Road, #01-01

plus39gelato.co

Recently opened in Boat Quay, this artisanal

gelato boutique is known for its 100 percent natural gelato,

freshly churned every day. One tip: because the gelato here is

free from preservatives, colourings and chemical addictives,

it tends to melt faster – so get licking! While flavours change

regularly, you can expect delicious classics like raspberry sorbet,

plus unusual ones like chilli chocolate ($5.50 for a small one).

MUST-TRY:

The Media ($7.50), which comes in two flavours; we

like the pistachio and ginger chocolate.
