Creative Cubbies
Shelving units are an obvious choice
for storing accessories and the like, but
rather than settling for something run-
of-the-mill, why not opt for one of the
many creative pieces on the market at
themoment? For instance,
Pure Interior
carries some interesting cubby shelves
that can be used to divide your room
and display accessories.
The key to an eye-catching display,
says the Pure Interior team, is colour. For
example, usingall redaccessories ongrey
shelves can create a beautiful ensemble;
similarly, white and black pieces on white
shelves. Keeping to one colour prevents
a cluttered feel and helps make your
cubbies the focal point of the room.

alongside Pure Interior in selecting its
pieces and styling its showroom. She
shared a few of her display tricks with us.
“If you put a nice piece in a boring
place, you can’t always feel the difference
between that piece and another. First,
decide on what you want your focal
point to be in the room. If you want to
Pure Interior’s bookcases create
a talking point in any room
emphasise the effect of an object, you
could place it in front of a mirror, or make
sure it’s well lit, or even put it on a glass
shelf. You should also place it near other
objects that bring out the best in it.”
Paula points to the current European
trend of buying 1980s or even 1940s
pieces and putting them in a classic
environment, though it’s not so simple
in Singapore where there’s a shortage
of retro or vintage furniture shops. “You
can have colourful plastic pieces inside
a classic interior; it just takes some skill
to mix old and new in this way.”
