BIG SCREEN

Here’s our pick of this month’s

happenings on the big screen and

the small screen

Left Behind

This apocalyptic thriller centres on a small group

of survivors who are left behind after millions of

people suddenly vanish and the world is plunged

into chaos and destruction. Ray Steele (Nicholas

Cage), the pilot of a jumbo jet, must calm his

hysterical passengers and land his damaged

plane, all the while wondering whether or not his

daughter and wife (Lea Thompson) are safe. Opens

2 October at Cathay Cineplexes.

Good People

This thriller follows Tom (James Franco) and Anna

(Kate Hudson), who, after falling into severe debt,

discover that their murdered neighbour has left

behind a stash of cash – $400,000 worth – and

decide to take the money to pay off their debts.

However, they soon find themselves the target of

a deadly enemy, and that’s when very bad things

start happening to good people. Opens 9 October

at Cathay Cineplexes.

The Best of Me

Based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks,

The Best of Me

tells the story of Dawson (James Marsden) and Amanda (Michelle

Monaghan), former high school sweethearts who are reunited after

20 years apart, when they return to their small town for the funeral

of a beloved friend. Their bittersweet reunion reignites their love, but

the very forces that initially drove them apart pose even more serious

threats than before. Opens 6 November at Golden Village cinemas.

The Good Lie

Based on the true story of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” – the 26,000

young men who fled to refugee camps during the Second Sudanese

Civil War (1983 to 2005) – this drama stars Reese Witherspoon as

Carrie, a no-nonsense woman who agrees to open her home to four

Sudanese refugees and help them start over in the United States.

The film, which is already getting some Oscar buzz, recalls the largest

resettlement of its kind in American history, when, in 2001, the US

resettled close to 4,000 “lost boys” in America. Opens 23 October

at Cathay Cineplexes.

The Judge

Duvall, this drama tells the story of Hank Palmer, a

suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the

truth and, along the way, reconnects with the family

he walked away from years before. The all-star cast

also features Vera Farmiga, Oscar winners Billy

Bob Thornton and Melissa Leo, and
