Destination:
Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
Last year’s trip was a thrilling experience in
which all the students were able to bond. We
crossed a very important barrier as a grade,
from being classmates to becoming a ‘family’.
We spent two nights in Phnom Penh, where
we visited various monuments and engaged
in interesting group discussions about what
we had seen and experienced. We also visited
the S-21 Genocide Museum where we visited
the rooms in which the Khmer Rouge victims
were tortured. This really made me put my life in
perspective. The highlight, though, was visiting
an orphanage of young children to play soccer
and basketball.
During our stay in Siem Reap we visited
Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. The Khmer
architecture really impressed me as it didn’t
resemble any structures I had seen before. We
also visited a craft studio where we watched
everything being produced by hand. I learnt so
much and had a great trip with my classmates,
and I can’t wait for the next experience!

C lassr oom in the Sea
Student:
Livia Sgobbo and India Bruhn, Grade 9
School:
United World College South East Asia
Destination:
Gili Islands, Lombok
Duration:
One week
Under the outdoor education adventure programme, 33 students and
six staff from both campuses visited the Gili Islands in Lombok for a dive
expedition. Cultural, environmental and social awareness were developed,
between some serious bouts of experiential learning in the sea.
Livia Sgobbo:
I learnt important life skills, such as trust and taking on responsibilities.
Besides learning how to dive, I also learnt how to work with people
I’d never met before. I made many new friends and really enjoyed the
activities we did after diving. We socialised a lot and learnt interesting
facts about the island and the marine life. I left Lombok full of amazing
memories and information.
India Bruhn:
All of the hard theory work leading up to the trip was worth it. Not only
did I make some amazing friends, I came home certified as both an
open-water diver and an adventure diver. On my first dive I was extremely
nervous, but once I was in the ocean my fears vanished. After completing
our diving courses we helped save the coral reef. We collected damaged
coral and we attached it to BioRocks. After exploring its wonders, it felt
really good to give back to the ocean.
