AposTherapy
AposTherapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical, drug-free and
personalised treatment programme developed by orthopaedic
doctors to treat knee, back, ankle and hip pain, which
utilises a unique foot-worn biomechanical system that aims
to reduce pain for certain orthopaedic conditions such as
knee pain, degenerative meniscal tear and lower back pain.
It’s a
personalised treatment programme based on a
biomechanical footwear device
– individually designed and
periodically adjusted to help improving mobility and relieving
pain in the knee, lower back and hip.
Particularly designed to relieve osteoarthritic knee pain, it
was developed in the 1990s by two Israeli doctors – one from
the field of orthopaedics and sports medicine.
You wear the device for about an hour a day while
performing routine daily tasks, explains AposTherapy, Clinical
Lead Lauren Taylor and this helps achieve rehabilitation in
two ways:
* Firstly, it enables the
forces through the joints
to be
adjusted away from painful areas and to support the
muscles.
* Secondly, it
re-educates the muscular system
around
the joints by means of a micro-level of instability – similar
to a wobble board. The functional combination of correct
body alignment with micro-instability is said to represent a
breakthrough in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems.
How do I get started?
The initial evaluation is a free consultation with a specially
trained registered physiotherapist. It includes an interview to
assess your pain, functioning and quality of life, together with
walking pattern (gait) analysis and a physical assessment of
your lower limbs and back.
What then?
Based on the evaluation, you’ll receive your own personally
adjusted, unique biomechanical device to help relieve
pressure from the painful area, and re-train the muscular
system around the joints. Your AposTherapist will advise you
on how to use your biomechanical device at home in such a
way that it blends into your daily life.
How does it work?
With every step, the device is instilling optimal walking and
movement patterns. During periodic follow-up consultations,
your device will be adjusted and your personalised therapy
programme updated. By re-educating your brain and muscles
to work properly again, it brings your body into optimal
alignment, creating healthier walking patterns and improving
biomechanical function.
How long will it take to see results?
Even at the initial consultation, when the device is set up
according to the evaluation findings, many patients experience
some pain relief during walking. The carry-over effect into
walking with normal shoes and barefoot depends on the
ability of the nerve and muscle systems to be retrained. In
an independent survey, 85 percent of patients reported a
reduction in knee pain, mostly within five weeks.
AposTherapy in Singapore treats clients from all walks of
life, including athletes with sports injuries, office workers with
chronic lower back pain and the elderly with degenerative
joint problems.
