SOCIAL CLUBS

Joining a social club is a popular choice for people seeking to settle in to Singapore
quickly and to meet new friends. It can soon become a home away from home,
as these
Expat Living
readers explain.
Tom and Jill Ramar, American
We immediately became members of
The American Club as part of Tom’s
benefit package when we moved
here in 2012. Our membership
helped us become assimilated into
the community. What initially helped
facilitate introductions and eased our
transition has become an integral part
of our lives.
Maddie and Connor take swimming
lessons at the pool, we grab drinks at
the Union Bar, get our dry cleaning
done, pick up items at the convenience
store, use the Business Centre, check
books out of the library; it’s all part of
the routine. We appreciate having a
centralised social hub full of amenities,
including the fun golf tournaments, buy
and sell boards, and the bowling alley.
The Club does fabulous parties; we
went to the Birthday Bash and the St
Patrick’s Day event, and we got our
Christmas food from them last year. We
always swear we’re not going to be at
the American Club all the time, and we
always are. Tom works out here every
day, we grab quick lunches here; the
Club has everything under one roof.
Maddie just turned 12 and got her
junior membership card. That gives her
the freedom to go to the Club alone
and to make charges on her card. The
SAS bus drops the kids off there in the
afternoon. It’s a safe place; we know
where they are. It’s liberating for the kids
and good for their confidence.
When we move home to the US,
whenever that is, it’s going to be really
hard to leave The American Club,
because it’s such a home base for all
of us. It makes you feel like you’re not
just one person in a hundred thousand.
It’s a tight-knit family – where you have
a voice, where you belong. It’s just a
feeling of being home.
