Minding your Ps and Qs, even when
others don’t. Kristen Graff, founder of
Manners in Mind, answers your sticky
social questions.
When walking down a corridor, which side
should I stay on – left or right? How do I
handle the weird left-right swerve when I’m
unsure what the other person’s intentions are?
Or is it up to me to stop walking?
When walking down a corridor, the rules of the
road apply: in Singapore, stay left. If someone
is approaching you, walk confidently straight
ahead. If the person coming towards you is not
paying attention, then step out of the way – you
don’t want a crash. In an office or residential
environment, a quick hello or good morning
while passing is always appropriate. This will also
help avoid the swerve if someone is not paying
attention.
I lent my friend some money thinking I would
get it back the next time I saw her. It’s not
an insignificant amount. I’ve seen her several
times since then, over a few months, and still
no money; she has obviously forgotten. Should
I ask about it – and how would I do that? – or
should I just write it off ?
It was considerate of you to lend money to your
friend. Unfortunately, seeking repayment is not
pleasant, especially when it appears she has
forgotten the loan. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask
your friend to repay the money you lent her. “
I
wanted to follow up on the $100 I lent you when
we were out celebrating Jane’s birthday. I’d be
grateful if you could deposit the money into my
account this week. Here are my bank details.
”
(Or, you could simply say, “
I’d appreciate it if you
could pay me back this week
.”) Lending money
to friends can make for awkward situations. Either
avoid this type of loan in the future, or consider the
money a gift.
