This just in: the
preventative
HPV (human
papillomavirus)
vaccine,
Cervarix
, has
recently been
approved for
a two-dose
administration
for girls in Singapore aged nine to 14 years. The vaccine,
meant to prevent infections caused by common cancer-
causing HPV types 16 and 18, has, until now, been
administered only in three doses to women above the
age of 15. The new dosing schedule is an alternative to
the three-dose programme, with the idea of protecting
more girls from cervical cancer through an easier
implementation schedule.
According to doctors, cervical cancer has a well-
understood pre-cancerous stage, unlike many other
cancers, and, while screening picks up pre-cancers in
women who already have HPV, preventative measures
like Pap smears and vaccinations – in addition to routine
screenings – are key to providing ongoing protection.
In fact, Cervarix has proven 100 percent effective in
protecting against pre-cancerous lesions caused by HPV
16 and 18 when given to girls who have not yet been
exposed to the viruses. To learn more, visit
