New to the Orchard neighbourhood is

Mitzo

, a modern

take on Cantonese classics in a sleek and stylish space.

Designed for sharing, the menu includes dishes like

lobster and shrimp dumplings with black truffle, deep-

fried octopus with cumin salt and pepper, and jasmine

tea-smoked ribs with mango salsa, plus a selection of

Chinese-inspired cocktails we’re just dying to try – the

Ginseng Daiquiri ($24) and Empress Sour ($20) with

chrysanthemum-infused gin, to name just two. 270

Orchard Road, Level 4 Grand Park Orchard.

ADRIFT IN FOODIE DREAMLAND

World-renowned chef and restaurateur David Myers recently launched

Adrift

by David Myers

in the Marina Bay Sands hotel atrium, and we couldn’t be

happier. The modern-chic space, hidden behind wooden slats in a box-like

structure, is super-sleek with lively music and a Ginza-style centrepiece bar

serving up all kinds of fun craft cocktails (around $23), concocted by New

York bartender Sam Ross. An extensive menu of sharing plates is influenced

by both sides of the Pacific – from playful bar snacks such as

caramel

popcorn with togarashi

($3) to artisanal toast in unexpected combinations

such as

uni butter and orange jelly with hazelnuts on pumpernickel

($31); plus charcoal-grilled treats and other tasty, imaginative nibbles like

ricotta with preserved lemon and Okinawan black sugar

($24).

Recommended to order six dishes for every two people, we weren’t

disappointed in any of our choices – all of which came in generous

portions. Highlights included the delectable

buckwheat fried chicken

($18) with spicy honey mustard sauce, and the

chilli crab sauce-

smothered cod with mantou bread

($28) – a spicily different take on

what we’ve come to expect from a cod dish. The

king crab pimento

grilled cheese

($35) was a hands-down favourite – a melt-in-your-mouth

delicious and indulgent twist on the traditional grilled cheese sandwich. For

sides, you can’t go wrong with

crispy baby potatoes with seaweed and

parmesan

($12) – just as scrumptious as it sounds – and a pleasing plate

of cold

eggplant with mint, soy and fermented chilli

($9).

For dessert, don’t miss the

Guanaja chocolate pot de crème with

burnt marshmallow

($12) – it has a super-rich, almost smoky taste – and

the

calamansi olive oil creamsicle

($14), a slab of lime and olive oil ice

cream that packs a refreshing and delightful punch, with a crunch. For

REVOLVING DOORS

• The 61 Boat Quay space previously

occupied by The Spiffy Dapper (now

at 73 Amoy Street), has become

St.

Monica’s

, a homey bar cheekily named

for the patron saint of alcoholics,

focusing on Belgian, English and

American beers, and all things anti-posh

and unpretentious – complete with New

Orleans and blues-style music.

• Inhabiting the space previously

occupied by Sushi Kuu is new restaurant

Ginzawa

, which offers authentic

Japanese classics with a modern touch.

Menu highlights include a pickled

daikon, salmon and seaweed roll, braised

kurobuta pork belly, grilled snapper fillet

brushed with caramelised egg yolk sauce,

and

chirashi don

, which comes with 11

types of seafood. 390 Orchard Road,
