The most important period in the Chinese calendar, the Lunar
New Year is a time when many of us join in with the traditional
lo hei
, or tossing of the salad, in the hope of prosperity. To
welcome the Year of the Goat, Chinese families will banish bad
luck by spring-cleaning, and welcome good fortune with red and
gold decorations and brand new clothes. During the 15 days
of festivities, families will visit friends and relatives, exchange
oranges for prosperity and give kids red packets
(hong bao)
,
and hold New Year’s Eve reunion dinners at Chinese seafood
and steamboat restaurants. Visit Chinatown from 1 February
to 19 March and get caught up in the atmosphere. Other
celebrations are the Chingay Parade (27 and 28 February)
and the 8th International Lion Dance Competition (7 February).
