P
utting
together this
year’s Travel
Guide has sparked
some interesting
emotions in me –
the strongest being
envy! How can I
ever hope to visit
all these wonderful
places in an
average lifetime?
My curiosity
about people and
places has been
seriously piqued.
Why did they
build the Dambulla
Temple in such
a precarious
place in Sri Lanka? Could anywhere make me
feel smaller than New Zealand’s Southern Alps?
How safe would I be snuggling up with the tigers
in Kanchanaburi, Thailand? Could I ever be fit
enough to cycle from Tibet to Nepal? And when
can I go and lie on one of the many exquisite
beaches of Southeast Asia?
Admiration and thanks feature firmly in my backpack of
emotions too. Having swallowed my envy, I’ve thoroughly
enjoyed corresponding with the plucky and talented Expat
Living readers and contributing photographers whose tales
and images of adventure and discovery make up the 2014
Travel Guide. I know how easy it is to watch all those good
intentions of cataloguing photos and completing travel diaries
fade into thin air once the suitcase is unpacked; but these folk
not only recorded their journeys, they have also generously
chosen to share them with us.
For me, working on the Travel Guide has had exactly the
effect it is designed to have – it’s made me want to pack my
bags, get out there and explore. I hope you’ll feel the same
way when you’ve finished browsing its pages. And please,
when you get back from your own adventures, remember to
write them down ready to send to us for next year’s guide.
