CRITICAL ISSUES

After serious surgery or a major illness, says
physiotherapist DECLAN HALPIN, the last
thing anyone feels like doing is getting out of
bed, let alone getting back into work, family
life and exercise! But that’s exactly what we
need to do.
Indeed, research shows that the earlier you
resume movement after surgery, the quicker
you get back to full fitness. Most patients
describe symptoms such as weakness, a loss
of energy, stiffness or pain in their muscles, as
well as a feeling of lost independence.
Declan agrees that most hospitals in
Singapore are excellent at caring for our
short-term rehabilitation needs. However, he
believes, most hospitals – not only here, but
throughout the world – fall short in the area
of medium- to long-term rehabilitation. This
involves helping patients get back to their
previous level of fitness, able again to go
for long walks on the weekend, pick up their
children, dive into the swimming pool or kick
a football around with friends.
With their experience in hospital care, and
their background in healthcare and exercise
rehabilitation, physiotherapists like Declan
and his team are excellently placed to provide
the kind of support patients need to recover
as quickly as possible, as safely as possible.
“We have a seven-bedroom physiotherapy
clinic to provide private one-on-one treatment,
plus a fully equipped 12,000 square feet gym
for some of the best exercise rehabilitation
services in Singapore,” he adds with obvious
pride.
Through both manual, hands-on techniques,
and various forms of electrical therapy, they
aim to help you manage and overcome
pain more quickly, and get your full range of
movement back as soon as possible. However,
says Declan, the focus of their treatment will
always be on exercise rehabilitation: designing
a programme of strengthening exercises and a
recovery pathway to take you all the way from
your hospital bed back to full health.
