Art Noir
Portuguese artist Adriana Molder presents two series of mysterious black-
and-white portraits inspired by iconic film figures and literary references,
in her exhibition
The Light in the Heart
. The
Mystery
series is made up
of six small-scale ink drawings – done in black and white with notes of red
– that call to mind 1940s suspense movies, with women presented both
as the observers and
the observed.
The Light
in the Heart
series,
meanwhile, includes
six portrait paintings
that focus on themes of
lost love and death from
Virginia Woolf’s short
story,
The Haunted
House
. 10 June to
10 July at Third Floor
at Art Plural Gallery,
38 Armenian Street.

All Lacquered Up
Vietnamese artist Phi Phi Oanh pushes the boundaries of lacquer painting
in her sculptural light installation,
Palimpsest
– which literally means
“scraped clean and used again” in Latin. The exhibit is comprised of
miniature lacquer “skins” painted directly onto glass slides, then projected
onto walls and translucent silk screens to create images similar to those
seen throughmicroscopes and telescopes – thus offering views that would
otherwise be invisible
to the naked eye. This
constant shifting of
perspectives, and the
act of looking through
a machine, represent
how we understand
reality in the current age
of digital reproduction.
See it until 29 June
at FOST Gallery, 1
Lock Road, #01-02,
Gillman Barracks.
